PONGAL POT PAINTING WITH PATTERNS
The Harvest Festival
Pongal is the harvest festival of TamilNadu and also celebrated all over India thanking the Sun God for providing abundant harvest. It marks the time of the year when the days get longer after winters and the spring season starts! Overflowing rice and milk in a Pongal pot is a symbol of abundance, prosperity and good luck. "Pongalo Pongal".
In ancient days the pongal pots were painted using natural dyes/pigments with twigs or fingers. Here is a simple and easiest way to paint your pongal pot and celebrate your visual treat along with your sweet pongal. Fill your pot with any of these easy patterns and feel proud on your artistic creation.

How to paint on the Pongal pot
Cleaning: Start with the cleaning of pongal pot. Soak the pot in water and scrub away any unwanted ridges or dots and make the surface smooth.
Drying: After all the dirt has been removed from the pot, allow the pot to get dried for few hours.
Priming: Prime the surface with a white based primer. Let it dry for a while. Redo the coat once again until a thick smooth layer is formed and all the holes are filled up. Clay pots always absorb the primer, so its always good to have one more coat.
Pencil Lining: Determine the style of the painting pre-hand and make a trial rough outline with pencil. Caution to be noted while using pencil that it is not too sharp to carve out the primer.
Choice of Colours: Choose acrylic based colors for the pot painting. Select the bright and vivid colors to mark it as the colors of celebration.

Outlining: Use a thin brush and mix little of the outline color with water, as required. Slowly apply it on the pencil outline and make a fair outline. Form the shapes and patterns which ever you like from the above. You can mix and match and create your own patterns from the base patterns given.
Coloring: Once the outline is dry, start with your favorite color, fill it in the shapes where ever required. After drying give another layer of coating for the colors to stay vibrant without fading. Be creative to give color over the color or mix of colors. Your pot with pattern painting is ready.
